The festival of lights is here again... And the most common of the wishes doing the rounds, reads "May the festival of lights dispel the darkness of ignorance...etc etc"... As always... And this gets me wondering...

Should we always wait for this festival of lights to convey this wish to our loved ones??? Is this not an apt wish for a new year, or a birthday??? Darkness - be it the one arising from ignorance or despair or hopelessness or wretchedness - can and should be chased away from our lives at it's very onset... So why then a specific festival alone, to convey this wish??? Is it just because of the symbolism of lighting lamps???

Why are there only specific wishes conveyed on specific ocassions I wonder...

I would wish that I could find a light everyday which would dispel some of the darkness surrounding and within me... I would not wait for the symbolism of Deepavali for this :-) And I would wish all my loved ones the same, not just now but on every special and momentous ocassion in their lives...

A Very Happy Deepavali !!!

Hmm...interesting thought! If people wished something on an ordinary day, the reaction might be "thanks, but why today?"...so thats why the practice of wishing something that is somewhat linked to that day...alwa? :)

If you want to observe how people will be taken aback, try wishing someone "Many many happy returns of the day" on deepavali? ;)

Happy Diwali :)

All of us do wish happiness for our loved ones always, and these occassions just provide us the platform to convey our wishes to them in a special way. Also, its like rekindling the relations.
As you said in you last sentence, this is one of the special moments. So lets enjoy every moment of this and spread this message :)

Divya..I appreciate ur thought..it does make a lot of sense.. but on the other hand.. the bitter fact is - we are so engrossed in this so-called 'busy life'..so I feel these festive occasions, give us all an opportunity(out of our busy lives) to express our care to our loved ones..

My thought was just that, in our culture, every 'festival' is inextricably linked with lighting lamps... Be it Gowri habba or Ugadi or any of the numerous other festivals we celebrate... So maybe I can begin a practice of wishing a wish I believe in for my loved ones, irrespective of whether it's Deepavali or Ugadi ...

@ Bit Hawk: :-) That's your domain and I would not dream of encroaching on it...

@ Harsha, Art: Hope you have had a wonderful Deepavali!!!
